Week 13

VoIP over IEEE802.11 has a lot to offer.Whether small or large organizations, the importance of VoIP is very significant. Many organizations have start using VoIP as main communication between employees.
There is a lot of factor to be consider in using VOIP
  1. quality of voice
  2. the medium used
  3. environment tested.
Other factors include the distance between the Access Point and VoIP client, and the interference from other 2.4GHz device. All of these factors have significant impact on the performance of VoIP on IEEE802.11
The VoIP system has significant impact on VoIP performance for wireless LAN. The results presented in this study show that VoIP performance on 802.11b and is depending on the signal strength and the distance between the client and access point (AP). The result also shows the relationship between VoIP impairment such as delay, jitter and packet loss that affect the voice quality measurement of MOS and R-Factor score.
In order to obtain the best quality of VoIP system, VoIP parameter such as delay, jitter and packet loss has to put into consideration and the parameter must be at the acceptable value. In order to achieve that, the access point must be installed in recommended area
The result, the range between VoIP client and Access Point must not exceed 65 meter. If the clients are located more than 65 meters, the call quality will drop significantly.

RESULT AND ANALYSIS
Introduction
In this chapter, the results gathered from the experiment are collected and are analyzed based on different segment. The information on the graph are based on the experiment data that have been done and contain information associated to VoIP performance:

  • Jitter : Jitter value is considered acceptable between 0ms and 50 ms and above from this, it is considered as   unacceptable.
  • Packet Loss : the acceptable packet loss is 1% to 3%
  • MOS Score : MOS or Mean Opinion Score are rated form 1(Unsatisfactory) to 5(Excellent)
  • R-factor : R-Factor or Rating Factor are rated 0(Extremely poor quality) to 100(High Quality), but if under 50, then it is considered as unacceptable

So, the VoIP performance will be done using VoIP performance software and IEEE802.11 signal software, as mention in previous chapter. The graph will be presented in multiple way; VoIP performance on IEEE802.11b and IEEE802.11g. Furthermore, analysis on VoIP performances comparison will also be done; VoIP performance comparison on IEEE802.11b and g, and an overall performance analysis which combine all two of wireless standard, VoIP performance comparison on IEEE802.11b and IEEE802.11g.

*p/s : The result and analysis of the study is not conclusive or proven, but more to assumption based on the experiments that have been done.

Wireless Network Equipment
Wireless network equipment is an essential component in this study. Wireless network utilize radio waves and/or microwaves to maintain communication channels between computers. For this purpose of study, the wireless network equipment or access point must support IEEE802.11b, IEEE802.11g and IEEE802.11n standard.

Setting up VOIP Network
In completing this study, there`s several ground work that needs to be done. Before collecting and analyzing the data, there`s a need to develop VoIP test bed on wireless network. As mention in sub topic 3.2.1, the test bed network is consisting of several equipments.
  1. Server: Installed with Skype and Yahoo Messenger. Server platform to direct calls from one end point or client to another end point or client
  2. Wireless AP: Linksys E2000 Wireless Router. Provide wireless connection for the end points to communicate to each other via the VoIP server
  3. Client: Laptop with wireless card that support IEEE802.11b/g and installed with Skype and Yahoo Messenger Application. The client terminals are the end point of VoIP systems producing voice traffic on the network that enable VoIP communication.
